A. Sings alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music
            Kindergarten:
            Sings alone on pitch from D5 to A5
            Sings in a group
            1st Grade:
            Sings alone on pitch from D5 to B5
            Sings in a group, following the cues of a  conductor
            2nd Grade:
            Sings alone on pitch from C5 to C6
            Sings simple ostinatos and partner songs within a group
            3rd Grade:
            Sings alone from B4 to C6
            Sings rounds within a group
            4th Grade:
            Sings accurately within a range of B4 to D6
            Sings descants and simple tertian harmonies within a group
            5th Grade:
            Sings accurately within a range of A4 to D6
            Sings 2 part music within a group
            Sings songs with appropriate interpretation of the culture and style
 
 
B. Plays alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music on instruments
            Kindergarten:
            Echoes simple rhythmic patterns in duple and triple meter
            Maintains a steady beat within a group
            Plays simple rhythmic and melodic patterns
            Plays basic rhythm and Orff instruments
            1st Grade:
            Maintains a steady beat independently
            Plays rhythmic patterns in duple and triple meter independently
            Plays melodic patterns independently
            Plays ostinato patterns to accompany various styles of music
            Explores piano keyboard
            2nd Grade:
            Plays rhythmic and melodic patterns while maintaining a steady beat
            Plays patterns expressively to accompany various styles of music
            3rd Grade:
            Plays independently within an ensemble
            Plays G, A, B, C, D on recorder
            4th Grade:
            Plays basic chords and strums on guitar, 1 octave on recorder and world drums
            5th Grade:
            Plays major and minor chords, 4 different strums and basic picking on guitar
            Plays 5-8 part ensembles on world drums
 
C. Improvises music
            Kindergarten:
            Improvises rhythmic patterns in response to teacher’s patterns
            Improvises short piece using a pentatonic scale
            1st Grade:
            Improvises melodic patterns in response to teacher’s patterns
            2nd Grade:
            Improvises simple variations on pentatonic melodies
            3rd Grade:
            Improvises simple rhythmic and melodic ostinatos
            Improvises a short melody on recorder
            4th Grade:
            Improvises simple rhythmic and melodic ostinato accompaniments
            5th Grade:
            Improvise 4 part drumming ensembles
           
D. Composes and arranges music
            Kindergarten:
            Creates musical accompaniments for stories using various sound sources
            Creates sound-scape pieces, choosing different timbres to play in a small group
            1st Grade:
            Creates group songs and accompaniments
            2nd Grade:
            Creates independent melodic and rhythmic accompaniments to songs
            Creates simple pentatonic melodies with beginning, middle and end
            3rd Grade:
            Arranges a short song or piece demonstrating changes in tempo and dynamics
            4th Grade:
            Arrange a familiar song demonstrating theme and variation
            Compose a short piece for recorder
            5thGrade:
            Compose a group composition fulfilling set musical criteria
        
E. Reads and notates music
            Kindergarten:
            Reads symbols representing long and short sounds and silence
            Identifies symbols that represent high and low pitch
            1st Grade:
            Reads and notates simple rhythmic patterns using quarter notes and rests & two eighth notes
            Identifies symbols that represent dynamics (loud/soft), simple rhythm  and pitch                                         (up/down/repeat)
            2nd Grade:
            Reads and notates simple rhythmic patterns using eighth, quarter & half notes and rests.
            Identifies symbols that represent pitch: up, down, repeat
            Identifies symbols that represent dynamics: f, p, <, >
            3rd Grade:
            Reads rhythmic patters that include: 4 sixteenth notes, triplets & dotted half notes
            Identifies and uses symbols and terms referring to dynamics and tempo
            Notates rhythm using:
 
            4th Grade:
            Reads and notates rhythmic patterns using: dotted quarter and syncopated notes
            Identifies and interprets traditional terms for dynamics, tempo and articulation
            Notates notes in treble clef within one octave for the recorder
            5th Grade:
            Notates graphic score for multi-instrument composition
 
F. Analyzes and describes music
            Kindergarten:
            Identifies parts of the music that are the same and different
            Identifies whispering, speaking, shouting and singing voices of a child
            Identifies specific musical characteristics: high/low, fast/slow, loud/soft
            1st Grade:
            Identifies parts of music parts of the music that are the same, similar, and different
            Identifies the sound of classroom instruments
            Identifies the singing voice of a man, woman, or child
            Identifies specific characteristics of music:
                        up/down/repeated melodic patterns
                        steady beat/no steady beat
                        faster/slower, louder/softer
            Identifies specific styles of music: march, lullaby, waltz
            2nd Grade:
            Identifies visually parts of the music that are the same, similar, and different
            Identifies the sounds of the 4 instrument families: string, brass, woodwind, percussion
            Identifies and demonstrates the acoustic principles of stringed instruments
            Identifies specific characteristics of music: legato/staccato, duple/triple, major/minor
            Identifies AB and ABA form
            Identify American Folk, Jazz, Blues and Cajun styles
            3rd Grade:
            Describes musical characteristics including changing dynamics
            Identifies major instruments in each instrument family aurally
            Identifies Native American, African, Classical and Modern styles
            4th Grade:
            Describes musical characteristics including changing keys and modes
            Identifies Rondo, Theme and Variation Form and 12 Bar Blues, and Baroque style
            Identify music and instruments from South and Latin Americas, Asia
            5th Grade:
            Identify Medieval, Renaissance and Romantic Styles, Music of Middle East/India
            Aurally identify all orchestral and band instruments, 4 major voice types and primary
                        world instruments
            Identify large forms of music: Suite, Concerto, Symphony, Opera, Oratorio, Ballet
 
G. Evaluates music and musical performances
            3rd & 4th Grade:
            Evaluates a musical performance based on 2 or more criteria
            Evaluates a classroom performance offering suggestions for improvement
            5th Grade:
            Generates criteria and evaluates a musical performance or composition
 
H. Relates music to all other arts and disciplines
            1st – 5th: Identifies similarities and differences in the meanings of common terms including:  repetition, color/timbre, and texture used in various arts
            Integrate in social studies/history, reading/language arts, math, science, visual art and dance
 
I. Associates music to history and culture
            Kindergarten:
            Sings songs in different languages and from various cultures
            Demonstrates appropriate audience behavior for school   performances
            1st,  2nd Grades:
            Work songs, spirituals and their origins
            3rd Grade:
            History and influence of Native American and African cultures on music in U.S. today
            Patriotic Songs and their history
            4th Grade:
            Lumberjack and Voyageurs Songs/ Influence of Irish, Canadian and French
            5th Grade:
            Music of the Civil War, Music of North America, Europe, Asia and Africa
